The following resources house the majority of the experiential opportunities available to Stanford students. We provide ways to search these platforms to return the best results tailored to your needs. All of the platforms offer something slightly different to cover the full spectrum of opportunities available.

SOLO

Stanford offers numerous opportunities for students to complement and strengthen the learning they do on-campus: internships, international experiences, research, public service (and so on) but it’s not always easy to find out about them, keep up with the deadlines and requirements, or even apply for them. Our goal is to make it easy for students to find opportunities, apply, and prepare for international travel if applicable.

You can search opportunities by keyword, location in the world and you can filter them by quarter, current class year, type of opportunity, and the sponsor.

Handshake

Handshake is an online platform that provides Stanford students with opportunities and connections related to their career aspirations and interests. In Handshake, you will find thousands of job and internship postings in a wide-variety of industries.

Handshake Saved Searches

In the job postings section of Handshake, you can create a saved search based on the criterion you select. Saving your search enables you to quickly find new job postings, and allows you to set notifications by email, text or in-app either on a daily or weekly basis.

Selecting Job Search Criterion

When you go to the Handshake jobs section, you will see the “All Filters” tab at the top. Two criteria in this menu that are often misunderstood are “Job Function” and “Industry”. Job Function is the role you play within an organization; “Industry” is the space in which you play a role. Additionally, students often opt to only select “Major” for their search. However, major is best used when you want to focus your search.

  • After you’ve selected your criterion, make sure to hit the “Save Your Search” at the left.

Opportunities on SAM

The SAM Projects platform connects you to real-world, experiential projects supported by alumni, families, and other Stanford affiliates. Alumni and parents have the potential to open doors of opportunity—even when so many other traditional doors are closing. SAM Projects empowers you to tap into Stanford’s network of alumni, parents and friends for short-term, project-based work

When you log into mentoring.stanford.edu, you can select the “Opportunities” option from the main navigation. This will display all of the current projects in the system. There are filters at the top where you can narrow your results to include aspects that are important to you. The experiential opportunities are uniquely provided to Stanford students, meaning they are smaller in number than opportunities in Handshake. It also means that the opportunities are just for you, Stanford students!
